"How
many times did you want to start drawing something and you
didn´t know how to start?I´m sure more than one occasion. You always have a
vague idea of what you want to do but you are not able to start something.
Most of
the times, the solution to this always was to do some “thumbnails”
before start what you want, in order to see different ways ect.
But, what happen if you don´t have enough time, or if the thumbnails doesn´t help you? The solution is not in the drawing, is in the words.
Here I´m going to give you a few steps extracted from a great master of creativity Edward de Bono,, creator of the “lateral thinking“.
1) You have a vague
idea of what you want to do in your mind. But, what happen if you don´t have enough time, or if the thumbnails doesn´t help you? The solution is not in the drawing, is in the words.
Here I´m going to give you a few steps extracted from a great master of creativity Edward de Bono,, creator of the “lateral thinking“.
2) Take a dictionary.
3) Without looking at it, and in a completely random way open a page and, also without looking at it, you point with your finger in whatever area of the opened page.
4) In that place you pointed, probably there is a word and its definition (and if not, take the closest word to your finger). Read the word and its definitions.
5) Relate any aspect of what you read with the idea that you have in the point 1.
Don´t
have any new idea? I´ll give you a true example:
Yesterday
I was thinking in some new illustration for my portfolio. I knew I wanted to make some characters being attacked by some monsters, but I had no idea of what kind of monsters. What I did was take the idea of “monsters“, and then opened a dictionary as I
said in the past 5 steps.
The word that I pointed was “womb” and inside some definitions in which it was talked about the word “fetus“. Suddenly, my brain makes a “Click !” and I made the next operation:
“Monsters + Fetus“= Monsters with a fetus look, milky and with a squishy skin."
